Advanced features such as access control levels ease the task of assigning user access rights.
The CCM console management appliance, for example, offers three levels of access control:
Appliance Administrator, User Administrator, and User. These levels are defined as follows:
With access levels, it is a simple matter to create new accounts and assign permission. Appliance
administrators are king of the hill regarding the ability to manage the CCM appliance and access to
attached devices. The CCM appliance is factory-set to contain one account: Admin, which has
Appliance Administrator rights. This account is used to configure the appliance and create
subsequent accounts.
User Administrators are key people responsible for systems attached to the console manger, but are
not responsible for the console management appliance itself. Accounts with this level of access are
able to establish new user accounts, to define access rights, and are able to access devices attached to
all ports. Accounts with User-level privilege are able to access only those devices to which they are
granted permission.
Internal user accounts are stored within the console management appliance. Although these
accounts are secure and simple to create, they may become cumbersome in organizations that
require many appliances to maintain. Consider an organization that has 15 CCM appliances that are
located at three different sites. Each time a user is hired or fired, it may be necessary to update the
user database of each appliance. This process may take several minutes per appliance. Centralized user
accounts are more appropriate when large numbers of console appliances or users must be managed.
