Notice how AVWorks management software offers a desktop view of the entire data center: by
selecting meaningful icons, servers, routers, and even operating systems are quickly identified.
Likewise, device names are clearly visible. Additional properties may be entered into the
application's database for each device. Device types may be specified, such as AIX, Solaris, Linux, or
Cisco Router. Location information such as Site, Department, and Location, may be entered for each
device. Asset management information and additional properties such as administrator name, phone
numbers, and comments, can be entered or displayed by a simple right-click on the device icon.
Powerful search, sort, and grouping features ease the task of locating failed units. Sort bars allow
devices to be sorted by device type, site, department, or location. All Cisco routers or Linux servers, for
example, could easily be viewed at a glance. Group folders are used to narrow the display to a
particular device type, site, or location. The search feature allows custom searches to be performed. By
searching for 'Joe Smith', for example, it is possible to view all devices that are administered by Joe.
Items are added to the AVWorks management software database using simple wizards that discover
CCM Console Manager appliances, device names, and even third-party appliances and servers if they
respond to SNMP queries. In addition to reverse Telnet and SSH sessions, AVWorks management
software allows in-band Telnet and HTTP sessions to be launched to all target devices, including
third-party appliances and servers. The Devices tab shown above presents a list of devices that are
attached to console management appliances including the Equinox CCM appliance and Avocent KVM
over IP switches. The Appliances tab presents a list of console management appliances and third-
party devices. This tab is useful when adding new appliances or configuring existing appliances.
