A simple click on a desktop icon within AVWorks management software launches a console session
to the selected device.
If the CCM appliance is configured for Telnet access, then a plaintext session will be launched. If the
CCM appliance is configured for SSH access, then a secure SSH session will be launched.
To further automate console access, AVWorks management software maintains connection
parameters for each target device in its database. For example, one server may require VT100
emulation while another may require VT320. Likewise, separate log files, if desired, may be defined
for management sessions with each device. When using AVWorks software, the mechanics of console
access are hidden from the user: IP addresses, port numbers, emulation modes, and other
parameters need not be remembered once they are stored into the application's database. These
parameters, however, are easy to view or edit.
Finally, AVWorks software offers credential caching, which provides the benefits of single sign-on.
Although each serial session is separately authenticated, users of AVWorks software need only enter
credentials once. These credentials are cached by AVWorks software and used to launch subsequent
sessions. Should the cached credentials fail authentication, the user will be prompted to re-enter his
credentials.
Tools For Quick Response
Murphy's law dictates that devices fail at inconvenient times. In many cases, the needed administrator
is not in the office when the failure occurs. For this reason, console management solutions are widely
used to provide administrators with virtual access to devices in the data center.
Console management appliances must provide out-of-band access via dial connectivity. When
selecting a console management solution, verify that the appliance is able to act as a PPP server.
Further, it is important to verify that the appliance supports authentication and access control on dial
connections. Advanced features such as IP forwarding allow for modem sharing, as shown above.
