IP traffic arriving at the serial port via the modem connection is redirected out the network port of the
appliance. In this case, the console management appliance is serving the function of the failed router,
thereby making it possible to access the console port of any device in the data center. The Cisco admin
may administer the failed router via the serial console port and restore it to normal functionality.
Most console management appliances offer a dumb terminal interface whereby attached devices can
be accessed. The CCM Console Manager, for example, presents a CLI to an attached terminal. Using
a CONNECT command, it is possible to establish a serial session with attached devices.
Administrators sitting in the data center may opt to use dumb terminal access.
Tools To Manage Users
Network administrators require access to a different set of devices than server administrators.
Likewise, administrators of Windows/Intel servers require access to a different set of systems than
Unix/RISC administrators. To enforce access policies within the data center, it's important to select a
console management solution that offers robust options for user authentication and access control.
Most appliances on the market provide an option to create internal user accounts. The CCM Console
Manager, for example, contains on-board database that allows for the creation of 64 user accounts.
Specific access rights may be set for each account. For example, an account created for Joe Smith
may grant him access only to devices attached to CCM appliance ports 1, 5, and 9.
Console management solutions
let administrators respond quickly
when servers or other equipment
malfunction. With virtual access to
devices in the data center,
administrators can restore
functionality from anywhere.
