Using industry-standard Telnet or SSH protocols, an administrator is able to access the serial console
port of attached data center devices as if he were sitting at the crash cart. The process of translating
network traffic into serial data is referred to as 'reverse Telnet' or 'reverse SSH'. The illustrated CCM
Console Manager appliance has one network port and 16 serial ports. Assume that the IP address of
the CCM appliance is 192.168.0.5. By launching a Telnet session directly to the CCM appliance, the
user would be presented with the command line interface, CLI, of the CCM appliance. This interface
would allow him to access attached devices or to administer the CCM Console Manager itself.
Appending a TCP port address when launching Telnet allows a CCM Console Manager port to be
accessed directly. For example, a Telnet session launched to 192.168.0.5 3004 creates a reverse Telnet
connection to the device attached to serial port 4 on the CCM appliance. The physical port, when
added to 3000, results in a TCP port that addresses a specific physical port. In a similar manner, SSH
connections may be established to attached devices by launching a connection to a base address of
3100 plus the physical port number.
Tools To Organize: Rolodex For The Data Center
The office Rolodex is a familiar concept to anyone with a large number of contacts to manage. The
feature is a response to the need for fingertip access to critical information. The Rolodex allows you
to quickly access contact information that is most important to you. Data center devices also require
contact information: IP addresses, system names, administrator names and contact information.
Where is this data stored? In many cases, it is relegated to memory and post-it notes. When trouble
strikes, action must be taken quickly. Fingertip access to device names and IP addresses is a must.
Applications, such as the Avocent AVWorks management software, when combined with console
management appliances, such as the Equinox CCM Console Manager, offer speed-dial access to data
center devices. A truly comprehensive console management solution must offer a database-driven
application to serve as a desktop for the entire data center.
